The PANTONE Solid Chips Coated & Uncoated set is a comprehensive professional colour resource for building palettes, developing mood boards, specifying spot colours and sharing physical colour references. Two ring-bound desktop books present all 2,614 Pantone Spot Colours on coated and uncoated paper, including 224 new trend-defining graphics colours created to expand the Pantone Matching System and inspire contemporary creative work.

Unlike a conventional fan guide intended mainly for browsing and specification, Solid Chips gives designers physical colour samples that can be removed and shared.

Every Pantone colour is supplied as six individual removable chips in each relevant book. The chips measure approximately 1.2 × 0.8 inches, while every page displays up to seven Pantone colours.

The perforated format allows individual Pantone colour chips to be removed cleanly for colour specification, presentation and approval. Unused chips can remain in the book, while removed chips can be returned or stored separately. Pages can also be taken out, reinserted and replaced, giving professional teams greater flexibility than a permanently bound reference book.

Including both coated and uncoated versions is essential because paper surface influences the way printed colour appears. Coated stock generally keeps ink nearer the surface, often producing a cleaner, sharper and more saturated result. Uncoated paper absorbs more ink, which can make the corresponding colour appear softer, more matte or less intense. Comparing both versions helps designers select the correct Pantone C or U reference for the intended print application.

The Coated book is printed on commonly used 100 lb coated stock at 148 g/m². The Uncoated book uses 80 lb uncoated stock at 118 g/m². These paper references support more realistic evaluation for commercial print, branding, publishing and packaging projects than screen simulations alone.

Each removable chip features colour extending to three edges.

All 2,614 Pantone Spot Colours are arranged chromatically, helping users browse related colour families and compare neighbouring shades intuitively. The 224 new colours appear at the front of the books for quick discovery and immediate creative inspiration. A numerical index at the front identifies the location of each colour when a Pantone number is already known.

Every colour chip is marked with its corresponding Pantone number or name. The enhanced printing process used for the updated edition supports improved colour accuracy and closer alignment with Pantone’s colour standards.

Two paper chip savers are included for organising removed colour chips, shortlisted palettes and project-specific colour collections. They help keep loose samples together while concepts move through moodboarding, design development, stakeholder evaluation and final approval. This simple organisational feature is especially useful in busy studios where multiple palettes and projects may be active simultaneously.

When chips for frequently used colours run out, replacement pages can be purchased separately and added to the ring-bound books. There is no need to replace the complete set simply because one colour has been used repeatedly.

For branding and corporate identity projects, removable Pantone chips provide a shared physical reference for defining and presenting core and secondary brand colours. In packaging design, chips can be placed against board, paper, labels, foils and other material samples. For graphic design and publishing, they support palette development and colour specification for brochures, stationery, campaigns, books and promotional materials.

Pantone Connect can extend the physical workflow into Adobe Creative Cloud. Selected Pantone colours can be incorporated into files created in Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, helping teams translate physical inspiration into digital artwork. Pantone Connect is a separate digital service and may require a subscription, but it provides a useful bridge between printed Pantone references and screen-based design workflows.

Physical colour chips remain important because monitors, calibration, colour profiles and ambient lighting can all alter the appearance of digital colour. Solid Chips provides a portable sample that designers, clients and production partners can view together.
